About Me

Growing up as the daughter of a doctor, I was deeply inspired by the world of medicine and aspired to follow in my father’s footsteps. I devoted myself to my studies and successfully qualified for several competitive exams, including AIIMS, AIPVT, and AFMC. However, as I explored my interests further, I discovered a captivating passion for speech processing, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in engineering.

A pivotal moment came during my first year of B.Tech when I stumbled upon silent sound technology online. Intrigued by its potential, I felt a spark that reignited my academic journey. My father, recognizing my growing enthusiasm for research, encouraged me to explore a lateral entry program at IIIT Hyderabad. With determination and a new sense of purpose, I excelled in the entrance exam and interviews, gaining admission to this prestigious institution.

At IIIT Hyderabad, I focused intensely on research, which deepened my love for innovation and technology. My time there helped me build a strong foundation in AI/ML, leading to opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the field.

I owe much of my success to my parents, whose unwavering support and belief in my potential have shaped me into who I am today. They have always taught me that my capabilities are limitless, regardless of gender, and their encouragement has been my constant source of motivation.

Beyond my professional life, I’m a proud mom to a beautiful son, who inspires me every day. I also find balance and creativity in singing, a passion that allows me to express myself beyond the data-driven world I work in.

These personal experiences not only enrich my perspective but also strengthen my commitment to advancing the fields of AI/ML. They serve as a reminder of the power of perseverance, the importance of creativity, and the profound impact of having a supportive community along this incredible journey.

  • Top 5 Finalist (out of 829 teams), Women in Data Science (WiDS) Datathon 2022 organized by Stanford University and Harvard University IACS, focusing on solutions for climate change and energy efficiency.

Core Projects

Demand Forecasting

This project involved developing a demand forecasting model to maintain Walmart's competitive edge in the retail market. For existing items, the model analyzes historical sales data, market trends, and competitor performance to forecast future demand. For new items, it specifically predicts initial demand within Walmart.

  • Additionally, natural language processing (NLP) techniques were employed to compare retail items between Walmart and the rest of the market (ROM) using embeddings, providing deeper insights into product positioning and consumer preferences

Wake Word Detection

This project focused on wake word detection application designed to activate upon hearing the phrase "Okay Huddle." It is optimized for work-from-home scenarios, accurately detecting keywords like "note," "important," and "crucial" despite background noise.

  • Incorporated noise cancellation techniques to handle common noises like cooker whistles, barking dogs, and car horns.
  • Ensured the wake word model processes audio effectively for note-taking during virtual meetings.

Indian Language Identification

As part of my master’s thesis, I developed an attention-based deep neural network to identify Indian languages from 3-second speech samples. This project highlights India’s linguistic diversity and my passion for speech technology.

  • Collected speech data from multiple Indian languages for model training.
  • Work published at Interspeech 2016; received Best Poster Award in 2018.

    • Demand Transference: Built a knowledge graph to understand the transference of demand in the absence of specific items at stores.
    • Forecasting Sales for Missing Items: Developed a forecasting model to predict sales of items missing from our stores but held by competitors.

    • Speaker recognition: Multiclass classification of speech into 9 speakers.
    • Keyword spotting: Detection of 13 keywords from meeting data.
    • Wakeword detection: Built an end-to-end deep neural network using Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) in Keras.
    • Audio classification: Developed an end-to-end deep neural network using LSTM architecture in Keras to classify audio as clean or noisy, addressing 10 noise scenarios relevant for work-from-home environments.
